Project Overview

The work which was conducted in the PIDOP project consisted of eight Work Packages (WPs), which were as follows.

WP1 Consortium management and coordination
WP1 was responsible for managing the project, coordinating the research activities across the consortium, and monitoring the execution of the work.

WP2 Collation and analysis of current policies
This work package took stock of the key policy discourses on civic and political engagement and participation by young people, women, minorities and migrants at EU, national and regional levels.

WP3 Development of a political theory of participation
WP3 formulated theoretically motivated research questions from the perspective of political science for investigation in the empirical work packages. It also contributed to the interpretation of the findings which emerged from these work packages at a theoretical level.

WP4 Development of a psychological theory of participation
In parallel to WP3, WP4 formulated theoretically motivated research questions from a psychological perspective for investigation in the empirical work packages. WP4 similarly contributed to the interpretation of the findings which emerged from these work packages at a theoretical level.

WP5 Modelling existing survey data
WP5 took advantage of the fact that there are existing cross-national survey datasets in the public domain which contain data that have already been collected from large representative samples in different European countries which can be analysed using powerful statistical techniques in order to answer many of the broader research questions which were generated by WP3 and WP4.

WP6 Processes in the co-construction of citizenship in different life contexts
In WP6, data were collected from purposeful samples to address the more specific research questions generated by WP3 and WP4, especially those concerning the social and psychological processes which underpin civic and political participation among young people, women, minorities and migrants.

WP7 Theoretical integration and practical recommendations
WP7 was devoted to producing, in the light of the findings obtained by WP5 and WP6, integrated multi-level theories of civic and political participation which synthesised the political and psychological theories of participation developed by WP3 and WP4. WP7 also formulated new evidence-based policy recommendations concerning how to enhance levels of participation among young people, women, minorities and migrants.

WP8 Dissemination activities
WP8 was responsible for ensuring that the research activities of the consortium achieved maximum impact among relevant stakeholders, other researchers and the lay public.
